We have agreed a fee with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes. David Ornstein and George Caulkin reported for The Athletic on Wednesday morning, August 05, 2026, that Newcastle are set to sanction the sale of their captain to us for £75million, with the Brazil midfielder now awaiting permission to leave the club's pre-season training camp in La Manga and travel to London for a medical.
The fee is a straight £75m with no add-ons, a point confirmed separately by Simon Collings and by the Newcastle Chronicle, which reported the full amount is due up front. Our opening offer was in the region of £60m; Newcastle had been holding out closer to £80m to £90m. The two clubs have met in the middle. Of that fee, around £6m to £7m is owed to Lyon, who retained a clause entitling them to 20 per cent of the profit Newcastle made on the player they bought for £38m in January 2022.
Where the deal stands
Personal terms have been agreed for some time. Fabrizio Romano reported that Guimaraes settled the personal side weeks ago and was simply waiting on the clubs to agree the fee. That has now happened. BBC Sport report we hope to complete the signing within the next 48 hours, with Guimaraes expected to undergo his medical later this week once Newcastle grant him permission to leave the camp.
The pursuit has run most of the summer. Newcastle spent weeks denying that club-to-club talks were even taking place, before conceding earlier this week that negotiations had opened after Guimaraes joined the La Manga camp and reiterated his desire to leave to new head coach Matthias Jaissle. An opening bid was rejected on Monday. A second, improved offer moved matters to conclusion.
What we are getting
At £75m, Guimaraes becomes the second most expensive signing in our history, behind only Declan Rice. He is a midfielder Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta have targeted specifically to add competition and cover for Rice and Martin Zubimendi, both of whom carried a heavy load across upwards of fifty matches last season, with Zubimendi visibly tiring in the closing weeks.
The numbers behind the player are substantial. Guimaraes has made 153 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists, and was central to their 2025 Carabao Cup win. He started all five of Brazil's matches at the 2026 World Cup and registered four assists. He turns 29 in November and had two years remaining on his Newcastle contract.
He joins compatriots Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli in north London. We have needed this midfield depth for some time, and it arrives with the window still open and pre-season underway. The medical is the last box to tick, and the confirmation should follow shortly after.
