Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract with Arsenal that runs until June 2030, the club confirmed on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. His previous deal was due to expire next summer, and members of his coaching staff have agreed new contracts alongside him.

If he sees the deal through, Arteta will be in his 11th year in charge and become the third-longest-serving manager in our history, behind only Arsene Wenger and George Allison. He is already the longest-serving manager in the Premier League following Pep Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City.

The case for doing it now

Arteta delivered our first league title in 22 years, was named Premier League Manager of the Season, and took us to our first Champions League final in two decades, lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. With less than a year left on his old contract, every poor result this season would have come with a contract subplot attached. That subplot is now gone.

“This is only the beginning of what we can achieve together,” Arteta said. Coming from a manager who has just won the league, that is a statement about the Champions League more than anything else, and after Munich last May, it should be.

The timing after Brighton

The announcement arrives days after our first defeat of the season, a 3-0 loss at Brighton that ended a run of seven wins from eight in all competitions and left us second, three points behind City. Committing to the manager straight after a bad afternoon is the right message to send the squad, and the right one to send everyone else.
