Werder Bremen are expected to make Karl Hein's loan move permanent this summer, with local outlet Deichstube reporting that the club will activate the purchase option in his deal for approximately €3 million. The 23-year-old's Arsenal contract expires on June 30, 2026.

Hein joined our academy from Estonian side Nomme United in 2018 at the age of 16 and signed professional terms the following year. He made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton in November 2022, and was a regular presence around the first-team squad during the 2022/23 season without establishing himself as a realistic option behind David Raya.

Three loan spells and a hand injury

His pathway at Arsenal was always going to lead away from the club. A half-season loan at Reading in the Championship in 2021/22 was followed by a full campaign at Real Valladolid in 2024/25, where he made 32 La Liga appearances and performed with credit. The move to Bremen for 2025/26 was intended to build on that, with the Bundesliga side viewing him as a long-term goalkeeping investment.

The loan did not go to plan. Hein made two appearances for Bremen, the last in October, spending the remainder of the season behind first-choice Mio Backhaus. In March, a serious hand injury sustained in training required surgery and ended his campaign. He returned to London to recover.

What the deal means for Bremen

Despite the limited appearances, Bremen have seen enough in training and in Hein's two outings to back him as their number one from next season. Their decision is linked to the expected departure of Backhaus, the 22-year-old German-Japanese goalkeeper who has attracted significant interest. Deichstube reports that Bremen could receive approximately €15 million for Backhaus, with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund among the clubs monitoring his situation.

Hein has made it clear to Bremen that he wants guaranteed first-choice football, and the club have evidently decided he is the right fit.

Our goalkeeping picture

Hein's departure, for a fee that barely registers in the current market, closes an eight-year chapter at the club. He arrived as a teenager and leaves having made a single competitive appearance for us. With Raya established as our first choice, Kepa Arrizabalaga as backup, and Tommy Setford as third-choice option, there is no pathway for Hein in this squad. The €3 million is reasonable business for a player whose contract was expiring regardless.

We wish him well in Bremen. He deserved more minutes than the opportunities in front of him allowed.
